Parked at porta potty and no snow. Very poor conditions for a mile, patchy snow, ruts from porta potty to 102 road turn off to Mosquito Meadow. Once you get to Sherman pass riding is okay from pass to 117 turnoff. Sherman Pass forest service sign showing pictoral view of Mt. Whitney is visible and an obstacle climbing Sherman hill. 117 turn off poor/no snow and lots of fallen trees. Trail 101 from 117 towards yurt is bare with little / no snow. ( Only rode a few hundred yards on asphalt approached fallen tree and turned around.) Only decent snow is between Sherman pass and Sherman Pass trail. Snow was nice compared to the other areas. Snow is 2 plus feet (no bald spots and the area around trees are small) with couple inches of new snow. Broke sled on a trail rut and limped home. Name: Don Brown ReportRode for couple hours on Friday at Sherman and rode to the Yurt. Some new snow blowing around, no accumulation. Saturday rode with Chuck, family and friend. Thank you for the nice time. Friday night camped at Snokat parking and was down to 26F early am, peak day temp was in the 50's. Little snow from snokat parking to Porta potty. Few feet of snow at Porta Potty. FIVE FEET AT SHERMAN PASS. Riding on and off trail around Sherman pass very very nice with on and off trail conditions very nice in the afternoon. Trail from Sherman Pass to Yurt became progressively worse with bare spots and deep channelled ski ruts. In Summary very nice spring conditions riding around Sherman Pass , trail to porta potty an asphalt adventure, and trail to Yurt is rutted. Trails show no signs of recent grooming. For what we found riding around Sherman Pass is your best place for deep snow with no bare spots. Name: chuck ReportRode Sherman Pass today conditions are okay there are a few bare spots of asphalt but overall was a good day for riding. The only draw back where the sign reads road closed you have to ride about a quarter mile before you get to the snow. I would like to thank Don from Ventura for helping me with my kids when they would get stuck Name: chuck ReportRode Sherman Pass today conditions are okay there are a few bare spots of asphalt but overall was a good day for riding. Sherman parking still at Snowkat parking below porta potty area. Several bald spots to porta potty. From there to Sherman Pass lots of snow on trail. Can see over half of Stop sign at Sherman Pass. Name: T.Meert ReportNolan and i cleared the trail from Sugarloaf to Parker Pass today. There were a few bare spots above the snowpark and also on Burnt Ridge, the problem is the last 13 miles from Parker Pass to the Ponderosa is closed due to a large hill slide that is blocking the entire rode. The coverage is still good above Sugarloaf, but temp.were in the mid 60's on Friday and it's going to get warmer this weekend. Name: Don Brown ReportStayed at Sherman Fri - Sat - Sun March 14-16 Staging area at SNOKAT parking area. Warm on Friday with bottomless slush. 7 feet at Sherman Pass. Saturday 15 March stayed below freezing and snowed a little late afternoon making the riding better. Rode with a group of 4 out of Bakerfield. It was almost 30 degrees with a fire in the YURT. Sunday 16 March about 15 degrees 9AM with no wind and 2-6 inches of powder with ice underneath. Left at 1PM, 22F, windy and snowing. Name: erin and greg ReportWe got about 2-3 of snow yesterday (3/15) - Marling, Medearis, Brand and the Lunns rode the trails which all have a couple of inches of loose snow over a solid block of ice. It's crazy slick, but nice to have the slides cleared, hopefully we can get the trail to pondo cleared by next weekend. Put your scratchers on, the sleds get awful hot in am but there's plenty of snow to go anywhere. Get your ride on everybody! Name: T.Meert ReportThe trail from Sugarloaf to Dunlap Saddle is now open and clear.Nolan cleared the rode on Wed. and is now passable through the hillslide area. Thanks Nolan Name: tmeert ReportSugarloaf area still has a very good base step. The snowpark is a little thin and very few dry spots.2-5ft.still on the mountain with very good riding.I heard coming out of the Greenhorn area is thin in spots but good from Tiger flat on up.Have not heard about Sherman Pass but i'm sure the riding is still excellent. Name: bfrene ReportI have not been up on Sherman now for two weeks could someone post a trip report on conditions. I saw several snowmobilers in Kernville last weekend. Thanks Name: donbrown ReportArrived FRI at SHERMAN road. Was in the 40's at 2AM SAT morning. Above freezing all day Saturday road on nice groomed trails with off trail 6 inch sanding snow with a foot or more of powder underneath. Total depth 7-8 feet at Sherman Peak. Only limitations for off trail was fog on the 112 and an occasional creek opening in a meadow. Sat Sun night was below freezing and made for need of scratchers Sun morning till the crust softened up around 10AM. Road with Mike, Kim and the plummer from Tehachapi who wanted his picture taken in front of Bald mountain portapotty! Email on the way! Found a half bowl near the Yurt. Loads of fun ! Name: bfrenes ReportEverything is groomed, perfect snow conditions. 8 1/2' ft. at sherman Pass, 5'to 6' at Poloma meadow. The warming hut caved in on one side Eric and I made repairs. Do not use the fire place it seperated inside the triple wall. Name: Ron Holt ReportRay Boen and I are/were the "others," not from the TV series "Lost," but from the Vorhees' sled recovery group. We had a fun day of riding Saturday; great conditions. We shoveled the snow out of the yurt and away from the door, even carved a few steps, as the snow is about three and a half feet deep there. If you are inclined, you might take up some hinge screws (perhaps an inch and a half in length); the middle and bottom hinges have been ripped out of the door jam. Name: bfrenes ReportEric and was at the trail head getting the snow cat ready for this week it looks like we picked up about 18" TO 24" OF NEW SIERRA CEMENT. We will be grooming all the trails starting on Monday. The Trail Head has moved down below the 7000' sign, it's a little tight trying to turn around. Name: Robbie Smith ReportHey G Vorhees,Robbie Smith here again. Well we went over to Greenhorn today and got your sled out. One problem it fell off the trailer on the way home and is now down by the Kern River in the canyon. Just kidding about the canyon part. I have your sled in Bakersfield.Call me 978-3030 We had trouble getting it started since the key was gone so we hot wired it.That sled is smashed so bad that we had to take the pipe off to get it to run. The motor mounts are broken along with a bunch of other things too. We tied a rope to the sled and pulled it out while Dan gased it to help get up the hill. It took about 2 hours. We were thinking you could pick it up at down at Tahoe Joes after you buy us dinner. PS My M-8 arctic cat towed that polaris all the way back to Greenhorn with ease. Hey give me a call. We are always there to help a fellow sledder Robbie Smith Dan Weaver Roy and Justin Allard Evertt Tracy and two others that stopped to help and I can't remember their names Name: Robbie Smith ReportHey G Vorhees. You need to go up there and ride that sled out of there. Dan and I have been riding greenhorn over 17 years and that slide was always an issue because there was not groomed trails.Get a Sequoia map and look at the area and you will see that there is a road down below your sled along Shultz creek that leads back toward the yurt. I don't know what kind of sled your riding short or long track but we would drop off that hill back in the day with our 121"x .75 lug yea .75 lug and climb back out the same way. The snow is set up good and you can ride anywhere you want on Greenhorn mtn. If you still need help let us know and we can come over to the bunny hills and get you guys out. Name: Roy Allard ReportJustin and I rode Sherman on Saturday. Bobby and Eric are doing a wonderful job on the trail grooming. The snow was set up nicely and we decided to head down trail 102 and pop over Cherry Hill to Big Meadow. We can never get enough of Big Meadow as it’s so flat and over 2 miles long! Check out some pictures on the photo gallery. Back at the snowpark we met a nice family from San Bernardino who were spending the night in their camper. They reported great groomed trails and full coverage to Blackrock and beyond. Name: G Vorhees ReportCharlie and I rode from Greenhorn today. About ten miles from Greenhorn by the slide on 51 I lost my sled over the side. I am okay, and I was being very careful, but it just "jumped". Anyway, we could not get it out at this time and I have e-mailed Nolan to ask what the procedure is to report it. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get it out other than waiting for thaw, let us know. Just wanted anyone who sees a red and black Polaris hugging the tree that I am okay. Name: gary moses Reportfound a pair of ray ban sunglasses at sugar loaf snow park sunday 2/10 08. 201-7334 Name: T.Meert ReportRode Sugarloaf area on 2-7-08.The snow was deep and the riding and hill climbing was excellent.A few miles north of Portugese Pass on the 51 trail a couple of the hillsides let go and blocked the rode.It took us a hour or so to cut out the rode so we could get by and ride.I left a message for Nolan and asked if he could possibly groom that area before the weekend hits. It's a fairly tricky area to get by so be very careful if your riding up there this weekend.P.S.I'll post a trip report if i here from Nolan by the weekend. Name: Tommy ReportI was up to Sherman yesterday riding. Excellent conditions. I met Eric as we were staging-thanks for the nice grooming! Lots of snow, short trackers better stick on the trail-carry a shovel. I've been up there about 6x this season, gets better every run. Boondock heaven. Name: Bob frenes ReportEric and I started grooming Saturday morning around 0800. We were able to groom 101, 104, 106, 107, 109 110 and the 115 and groom back to BlackRock for the evening. Sunday Morning we woke up to 24" +inches of new snow at BlackRock we were able to groom part of the 111 and all the 113 to the 101 back to the ranger station. Monday morning we groomed 101 and 107 and back to the trailhead. Sherman pass vista, at the time was showing 7' ft. Its turning ou to be a pretty good season so far. Enjoy Name: erin lunn ReportThe Lunn clan rode from Greenhorn to Ponderosa on Sat - met Greg Marling and Larry Medearis at Portuguese and we were at the Lodge by 10:30 for a hearty breakfast. Loving the groomed trails - thanks Nolan. Word of warning, though - nasty snow berm about 2-3 miles from the bridge. (Ask Greg Marling about his X-games worthy, second hang time, 35 ft jump!) Name: Justin Allard ReportWe (by that I mean my dad, Roy, Robbie, Brian, and Don, whom we met in Kernville at Cheryl's Diner) rode Sherman Pass today. The snow was excellent and set up nicely for some great, go anywhere, off trail riding. Bobby had been grooming the trails before we got there, and as usual, he is doing an excellent job. We played around the Sherman Peak area and then headed to the Yurt for lunch. Bobby had lit a fire in the Yurt, so it was nice and warm when we arrived. After lunch, we headed back toward the truck, my dad, Robbie, and I riding off the trail pretty much the whole way back. It was an awesome day of riding, great snow, great weather, and great friends. Name: T.Meert ReportRode Sugarloaf/Greenhorn area on Friday Feb 1.Nolan did a great job on grooming the mountain, you will be pleased.Went and had lunch at Shirley Meadows, very good.Conditions on the mountain are the best i've seen in years.Have fun and widen the trail as you ride.P.S.Stay to the right and use hand signals. Name: Roy Allard ReportThis report was copied from the CNSA Groomer Information. JANUARY 29, 2008 Truman Duncan and myself went to the Sugarloaf Trailhead to groom. We drove the Mattracks from the Hot Springs station to Sugarloaf by FS road 23S05. The wind storm on Sat and Sun had knocked down several dead snags in the White River Summer Home tract and we had to cut our way through. Fortunately none of the cabins had been hit. The Sugarloaf Trailhead had about 8" of new snow with an overall depth of 10-12". We left Sugarloaf Trailhead at 1330 hrs and track packed and cut drifts on the 63 route from Sugarloaf to Portuguese Pass. Snow Depth at Portuguese Pass is about 4'. Along the way we were passed by 2 snowmobilers coming off the mountain and one was Tim Mert the Volunteer Groomer Operator Trainee for the south end. At Portuguese Pass we headed south on the 51 route to Greenhorn Summit Trailhead. We arrived at Greenhorn Summit about 1800 hrs. Overall snow depth at Greenhorn Summit is about 12". There were a couple of spots where I did some "farming" with the blade a couple of miles out of Greenhorn Summit. We bucked and removed one 36" tree from the road at the Kern County line. It had fallen in an earlier storm and there were several 12-15' sections of tree buried in the snow. At Greenhorn Summit we turned around and used the blade and tiller all the way back to the Sugarloaf Trailhead arriving there at 2130 hrs. The 51 route is fully groomed for 6 miles and the 63 route is fully groomed for it's entire length of 4 miles. Hot Springs station is out of diesel fuel in it's tanks and there is no local vendors for which to purchase fuel. The fuel contractor could not give a delivery date so we will make one more trip on 1-31-2008 to groom the Tobias Peak and Frog Meadow area. After that we will be out of fuel until the contractor fills the tank. Nolan H. We unloaded at the river (just north of Kennedy Meadows) and rode from there. There was about a foot of powder on top of last week’s groomed trails. The meadows were fantastic, but we spent a lot of time on the wrong end of a shovel. Name: Tommy ReportSherman Report 1/26-27 Super deep pow. Boondock heaven - short trackers better wait until it sets up some. Carry a shovel and extra supplies. We broke trail pretty good to the yurt and back to the truck. Excellent conditions, tons of snow...lets hope it keeps up. Name: Tommy ReportI rode Sherman solo yesterday. Excellent conditions considering lack of snow for the last couple weeks. I was pleasantly surprised we still had so much up there. Met a nice fellow and his lady friend parking, didn't catch a name but very nice folks. Sorry I missed everybody else. I rode down to the yurt and dropped off a little wood. Mainly stuck around 103/105 and the top of the pass boondocking. Name: Roy Allard ReportHey... check out the photo gallery with updated pictures. Be sure to send yours to me so I can post them on the web site. Thanks, Roy Name: Roy Allard ReportMy sweetheart Terri and my boys Justin and Jeremy headed to Sherman on 1/20/2008. We meet the Tasos and Weaver families and spent the day riding the wonderful groomed trails. We played at the Pass and then at Paloma Meadow. After a quick bite to eat we headed to Blackrock and down to Troy Meadow. Troy was calling our name as it we had 12 sleds and ½ of them had kids riding them. I found a path across Fish Creek to the east side of Troy that was unmarked. After we left it looked like a super highway. Terri had a ball racing her sled full throttle up and down the meadow. It was a nice day with plenty of sunshine and visiting with great friends. Name: Tommy ReportI may ride Sherman tomorrow. White Ford F-350 - red summit, say hello if you're in the area. Name: bfrenes ReportEric and I got all the trails groomed. Condition are outstanding with packed powder, spring condition. You could not ask for better conditions. Just a reminder, I rode by Bonita Meadow last week and this week and saw several snowmobile tracks on the snow survey coarse please stay off the north end of Bonita Meadow. You can see metal pole in the meadow. This compacts the snow and gives a false reading. Name: Chuck Teed and Kristy Hand ReportWent to Sherman for the first time and met Roy and others from the Sugarloafers. We only have one sled and Roy was so generous to let Kristy ride his extra sled. That made our day! The trails were awesome and we can't wait to go back next weekend! Name: Roy Allard ReportJustin and I went to Sherman on Saturday. The snow was most excellent. We rode with Dan and Robbie, Joel and his friend Tim. Bobby had 101 groomed to the Yurt and also 103, 105, 116. We didn’t go past the Yurt and played off trail all day. We met some new (to the west coast) snowmobilers Chuck and Christy. They were “in the know” thanks to the Sugarloafers website. They have been in contact with the club and were prepared with trail maps. Bobby is planning to have the entire trail system groomed by next weekend. We plan on riding them. Pray for more snow. Name: Roy Allard ReportCurrently 32 degreed at 8am in Kernville. After breakfast at Cheryl's we're riding the steep and deep at Sherman. Cone join us. Check back tonight for conditions. Pray for safety and more snow. Name: Tommy ReportRode Sherman yesterday 1/6/08. I had to park 5 miles down from the normal parking area. There was about 10" at 5500'. It was cloudy and snowy lightly as we rode up. By the time we got to the yurt is was sunny. Super deep pow everywhere. I shoveled the door out on the yurt, it was buried about 2 feet. 3+ up higher. Lots of boondocking - and lots of stucks. Excellet day. Get up there while it's good. When we left, the road was plowed up at to a point but not to the parking lot. Name: Chuck Teed and Kristy Hand ReportNew member looking to ride next Saturday, 1/12/08. Unfamiliar with the area and hoping to find others to ride with. Interested in Sherman Pass and coming from the Kern Valley area. Please send a message if your up for it. Name: Chris Borden ReportI rode up to the Lookout at 11am on 01/06. There was a foot of new snow from about 6500' to the top. At Sugarloaf park we have six new inches of snow. Lion Springs got about eight inches. The snow was very wet, and the trail riding is good. There still isn't enough snow to do any serious off trail riding. Let's hope for some more snow tonight! C-Ya Up There! Name: Roy Allard ReportAs a new year came it was calling for a day in the snow! On January 1, 2008 Terri, Justin, Jeremy and I headed up to Sherman Pass for some family play time. The weather was great and the snow conditions were optimum but we need more of it to go boondocking. We were the only ones on the mountain and enjoy being together. Check out some awesome pictures on the Photo Gallery and pray for snow! Name: Cheryl Mathews ReportRick and I enjoyed putting a few more miles on our sleds over the weekend. Unfortunately we had to work so we came home Sunday evening. Sure wish we could've stay though, there's going to be a little New Years Eve party up top that I'm sure will be a good time. On Saturday we hooked up with Chad Tuttle and his friend and that evening we chatted with the McCoys and Greg Marling and made a date to hook up and ride Sunday. Well, ride we did with Mike McCoy, Shane Floyd, Greg Marling, and Greg and Erin Lunn. We also found Daryn Brightwell, Mike Wacker, the Moses's the Melos's, and we passed some other riders but aren't sure who they were. Our snowpark was jammed full and what a nice site it was. There were 10 rigs in there and other vehicles parked along the road side. Yes, the hills were busy and I think everyone had a great time. Rick found the edge of small log that no one else saw with his right ski and it caused a bit of damage. Greg Marling marked it with some plastic tape so watch for it on the short rode up to Tobias Peak on the right side of the road. See you on the hills this coming weekend. Pray for more snow! Name: erin lunn ReportWe're ringing in the New Year at Sugarloaf - conditions about the same here as Sherman - some asphalt near the snow park, but thin layer and enough to get about anywhere you want to go (except off trail). Pretty cold - 31 at about 5 tonight. Lots of people on trail = The Moses, The Lunns, The McCoys, Greg Marling, Daryn Brightwell, Mike Wacker. Chad Tuttle was up Sat with a friend from work and lots of others also. Name: Mike Garland ReportRode Sherman on Sunday. About 2 ft. at the Vista. The morning it was still frozen and the top foot was light and powder with the bottom foot a good base. No grooming yet and not many tracks made the roads fun and had good coverage to Blackrock Station. Was able to get off the trails some, but is still borderline dicey- need more snow. Temps started to climb by noon, and was starting to wet up the top layer- It will make a great base if we don't lose much and get some more soon. Name: chuck ReportHas anyone been to Sherman Pass in the last couple of days and how are the conditions? Name: Roy Allard ReportJustin and I made our maiden voyage to the snow on Sunday December 23rd. We rode with Weavers, Robbie and Tanner Smith and a newer rider Rob from Ponderosa. We rode Greenhorn to the Yurt, Tobias and the meadows. We met up with Tim Mert at Portuguese pass who rode in from Sugarloaf. We saw the Mathews and others taking advantage of the sunshine and the snow. A tree is down about 2 miles from Portuguese Pass when coming from Greenhorn. We were able to move part of it out of the way to allow us to get by but there is a big hole and the rest of the tree so be careful. After we got back to the trucks Tim, Justin and I rode up to the ski area. They had just over 400 skiers taking advantage of the pristine slopes. All the trails are fully covered but we need more snow or they will soon have bare spots and off to Sherman we will go. Pray for more snow… soon! Name: Mike Reportany updates from Sherman?
